Review & Giveaway: Mrs. Renfros Salsa

I was recently provided with the opportunity to try 4 varieties of salsa and other sauces from Mrs. Renfro's Salsa, a tasty gourmet salsa company in business since 1940 based out of Fort Worth, Texas. We all know that nothing is hotter than the stuff that comes out of Texas (except for maybe New Mexico!). We chose a good variety of snacking salsas and well as sauces that could be used for cooking as well. I love the packaging they arrived in; it was like opening up a present, very cleverly displayed! Take a look:

Here are the varieties we choose to review:
  • Ghost Pepper Salsa: My husband loves some heat to his salsa. He grew up in New Mexico where a common question asked at the dinner table was "red or green?" chili sauce. His tongue is much more accustomed to spice than mine, that is to say he has a much higher tolerance for the heat of spice. One of the hottest peppers in the world is the ghost pepper, and you don't often see it in salsa varieties so my husband was excited to try the super hot Mrs. Renfro's Ghost Pepper Salsa. He thought it was quite spicy, and gave a good and satisfying burn after a few bites. He commented that if you wanted to try a new diet, try the salsa one: eat hot stuff like this, and you won't eat much of it before the spice squelches your appetite! I was brave enough to try the salsa and after one bite I was in pain. Unlike my husband I did not enjoy it as much and I spent the next 10 minutes with my tongue in a glass of milk (one of the only things you can drink to lessen the effects of the spice called capsacin) to little relief. I did not go back for more. My husband however likes that he will have this salsa around for a few months to top his favorite Mexican dishes. THIS SALSA IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!

  • Mango Habanero Salsa: This was the perfect variety of sweet salsa for me. I like a little heat to my salsa and this struck the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. I only needed a few extra chips at the end of the bowl (which I actually licked!) to calm the burn on my tongue. No milk required this time! I enjoyed this as a dipping salsa, but I could easily see putting it in fish tacos or over chicken and rice for an easy way to add flavor to a quick weeknight dinner. My husband found it "quite tasty" and thought the mango was sweet but not overwhelming and better than most other jarred salsas he has tried.

  • Mexican Hot Sauce: We enjoyed using this sauce to make enchiladas. It gave it a good taste and was an easy substitute for canned enchilada sauce. We liked trying something new to change up our normal enchilada routine. I think we could have maybe used double the amount however and have enjoyed it that much more. It wasn't quite hot enough for our tastes, more on the tex-mex side of things, but it tasted good. Spread out over an entire dish of enchiladas it didn't provide a ton of heat, so we did end up reaching for the Tabasco to kick it up a notch.
  • Pomegranate Salsa: This salsa sounded interesting to me in the online selection so I had to give it a try. It wasn't as sweet as the mango salsa, nor as chunky. It had a good flavor, and reminded me a bit of a sweet barbeque sauce. This variety was mild and tasty enough for my toddler, who has recently discovered condiments, to enjoy on his chips as well. I am planning to give this one a try over pork or fish soon or taking a stab at the recipe on Mrs. Renfro's website for Spinach and Strawberry Salad for which the pomegranate salsa serves as a dressing.
Mrs. Renfro's makes a wide variety of jarred salsas, sauces, syrups, and other delicious gourmet goods. Their website also has a Kid's Corner with games and a coloring sheet!

  5. I think I would really like the Mexican Hot sauce. I like spicy, but I'm thinking the Ghost Pepper sauce may be a little too spicy for me. Thanks.

  6. I also find that what many salsas consider to be hot, I consider to be on the mild side. I usually add some other type of heat to it like hot peppers.
