The Red, White and Blue Giveaway Hop runs from June 25th - June 30th.  Happy Hopping!!

I was  recently given the opportunity to work with flap happy on a review of their great summer kid's outdoor accessories. Flap Happy was started by a wonderful mom of four, Laurie Lipson Snyder 25 years ago. They make protective hats in many styles and clothing for infants and children through size 10. You can find them in many retail locations or shop online at All their products are made in the USA.

I was sent a pair of boys swim trunks with liner and a signature Flap Happy reversible hat. There are so many choices for cute swim wear out there for boys and girls these days. I was particularly excited to see lots of cute choices on the Flap Happy site that would satisfy any shopper. From modern print sea turtles to a childlike underwater sea scape which I ended up choosing. If you know anything about me, you know I had to get the ones with the sea stars! Since I opened my Etsy shop Two Little Sea Stars I have been buying lots of sea star accessories so I couldn't help myself when I saw this pattern for the boy's trunks. I have a few other suits for my son Logan but what I really like about Flap Happy's trunks in the elastic waist band. Logan's other trunks look a lot like men's short with the flap of velcro and ties that are basically useless for keeping trunks around a toddler's middle. These were the first trunks that actually stayed put. I would have liked if the liner had been a little lower to make more room for the swim diaper I use. Then the shorts could have been a little bit higher, protecting Logan's skin a little more.

Speaking of protecting skin, did you know the sun's ultraviolet rays can penetrate clothing? If you dress your kids in light clothing, be sure to do a hand check: if you can see your hand through the weave of the clothing then your kids need sunscreen as well, even under the clothes if they are going to be outdoors during peak daylight hours or from 10am to 4pm. This applies especially if their clothes get wet and you can see through them. Taking care to protect my family's skin from damaging rays is very important to me. That's why I think it's great the Flap Happy hats and swim clothing have UPF 50 + protection. This means that only 1/50th of the sun's UV rays can pass through the clothing. This is one of the highest ratings for protective fabric. To top it all off, they are also chemical free.

I really like the Flap Happy hat I chose for Logan. It has a wide brim and is reversible. Flap Happy offers a variety of hat styles and some have much larger flaps for even more skin protection. These would be particularly useful with infants under 6 months who can't yet wear sunscreen, or any child with skin that is sensitive to the sun. I thought the hat I chose in the "Fun in the Sun" style still offered plenty of protection for my skinny little guy even without the flaps. I also loved that it had a velcro strap with a very wide strip of velcro for easy adjusting. Logan has no problem letting mommy know he doesn't want to wear his hat, but at least I can deter him from taking it off if it has a strap. This hat also dries very quickly since it made of Nylon and Spandex like other swim wear. Logan's canvas hats are usually wet for days after they accompany him to the pool. I would definitely recommend this line of hats to any frequent pool or beach-going family with young kids, or to anyone who thinks their little ones will spend a lot of time running through the sprinkler in the yard this summer.

  1. Yes, I know about the UV rays. My husband had a melanoma scare a few years ago. We use sunscreen when we go outside, and my kids wear UPF swimsuits.

  2. i did know that. i am redheadded and very fair skinned, so the baby and i stay out of the sun as much as we can.

  3. Repeated applications of sunscreen, time out of the sun, clothing coverage.

  4. i did know that and we use lots of sunscreen all over body

  5. I did not know it can penetrate through clothing. I make sure my grandson always wear sunscreen and a hat to protect him.

  6. Yes I knew. Use sunscreen on places hat the sun doesn't even get too.

  7. I knew they could penetrate light clothing

  8. Yes I knew that UV penetrated clothing. I rub my kids down Head to toe with sunscreen and then put clothing on. Then if they go swimming they get the rub down again. I do not allow them outside between 12-4pm because the sun is more intense

  9. I knew it could penetrate clothing. We try to limit our kids exposure by avoiding peak sun hours.

  10. I bought my daughter a swimming suit that has sun protection right in the cloth from ecostinger.
